Die frau Rauscher aus de Klappergass

This is, to my knowledge, a classic Frankfurt song actually.

  • My father had a pub in the Klappergass in Sachsenhausen, Frankfurt. That was many years ago, however. I know the song very well. Every year, there is a fountain festival and a new little fountain is built somewhere in this old part of Sachsenhausen. All the little streets have cobble stones. So one year, perhaps 1958 or around there, the Frau Rauscher Brunnen (the Frau Rauscher fountain) was built. When you walk by the fountain, a stream of water comes out of her mouth. Visitors don't know this and often get "spit on" as they are walking by. It's a lot of fun. The specialty in Sachsenhausen is wine made from apples. It doesn't taste that great, one has to get used to it. When they make the apple wine in the fall, the whole area smells of the remnants of the crushed apples. Aside from many typical dishes, like Rippchen mit Sauerkraut (pork with Sauerkraut) there is Handkaes mit Musik. It is a very smelly cheese which is served with diced onions and an oil/vinegar dressing, and the local dark bread and butter. Hand cheese with music, would be the interpretation. Because the cheese is the size of the palm of your hand and the music? Well, what happens when you eat onions?!! Heidrun Smith
